KUDOS & WINS
The Charleston Division recently received the Zero Harm award for Suicide Prevention from SCHA. This important initiative aligns with MUSC’s High Reliability and patient safety philosophies. These are the categories that the award was based on: training, policy, safety planning, screening, and follow up. The mental health leadership team has prioritized patient safety efforts and implemented several strategies related to preventing suicide. These strategies include a focus on ongoing training of care team members including standardized suicide risk screening tools and safety plans. Other strategies that have been implemented to support a focus on safety at all times include an increase in scheduled group programming, thorough and frequent safety rounds, and increased camera monitoring.
EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION PROGRAM
Do you know an employee who has gone the extra mile recently? Nominate them for the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences' MVP Award! This award will be given quarterly to an employee nominated by their peers for going above and beyond in the workplace. For more information or to nominate an employee, please visit our Employee Recognition Page on the Horseshoe.
MUSC COVID-19 VACCINE POLICY UPDATE

In late December, we set a Jan. 15 deadline for care team members to comply with our revised policy regarding COVID-19 vaccination

This was a very quick deadline for compliance, and we set this timeframe to help mitigate the current COVID-19 surge we are seeing in our hospitals and ambulatory settings. We have made great progress in a few short weeks, and I thank our leaders for their cooperation and encouragement.

Remember the “why” behind this policy. We take care of many patients who are highly vulnerable to any infectious event, so we must be sure to respond aggressively to all variants. This includes variants with less severe symptoms like Omicron, which some are terming “Omicold". While most people may experience milder illness, many of our patients are susceptible to more serious outcomes.

We are seeing a record number of patients in our hospital with COVID-19 and have a high number of care team members off due to COVID-19, but compared to other health systems without this type of policy, we are in a much better position.

We are extending the deadline from the original Jan. 15 date for care team members to comply with our policy. See below for details:

  • Jan. 25, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. (Deadline has passed) - Care team members who remain out of compliance will no longer be eligible for pay for performance for this fiscal year. Note: It is our standing procedure that anyone not in compliance with organizational policies are not eligible for performance pay.

  • Jan. 31, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. - Final Deadline. Non-compliant care team members will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action.

We will communicate via email to all care team members who are non-compliant as of Saturday, Jan. 15. Leaders should review their reports and cascade this information to these care team members as well.

Thank you for your continued leadership on this vital topic.

Patrick J Cawley, MD

CEO, MUSC Health

FENTANYL URINE TEST
CLINICAL NEUROBIOLOGY LAB

FENTANYL URINE TEST NOW OFFERED BY

THE CLINICAL NEUROBIOLOGY LAB (CNL)

The use of the powerful opiate drug, FENTANYL is on the rise, accounting for a large share of overdose deaths in SC, and the greater US.

Previously, urine drug testing at MUSC could not detect Fentanyl use. The Clinical Neurobiology Laboratory has recently completed an extensive validation of a qualitative (positive vs negative) urine test for the presence of Fentanyl which can be used to distinguish this drug from other commonly used/abused opiates such as oxycodone, buprenorphine and morphine. This test should aid clinicians in the evaluation of patients in multiple clinical settings, especially when illicit drug use is suspected.

Simply order: “Fentanyl, Urine, Qual (IOP LAB)” or “LAB9066”
